Benefit Concert Will Make Barebones ArtSpace ‘Better Off’

'NoBetterOff,' is the name of the band of five Northern Virginia musicians whose feet are firmly planted in the traditions of folk, rock, blues, and country music. . .

Falls Church is home to quite a few professional or occasional musicians.  One City resident who meets both criteria is Steve Selby, one of the founding members of the band No Better Off that will hold a benefit concert on Saturday, October 24 at ArtSpace Falls Church.

The multiple-use arts center opened in June in what is commonly referred to as a “barebones space.”  Approximately $100,000 more is needed to finish the construction and to fully equip and furnish the space for the planned theatrical performances, visual art exhibits, music and dance concerts, workshops and classes.

Benefit organizers are hoping to raise $2,500 of the needed funds for ArtSpace at the concert Saturday night.  “We’re delighted to be helping out with what we think is an exciting, new direction in Falls Church” said Selby who plays guitar and sings in the band.

What began years ago as a regular Friday night jam session has evolved into a band that plays regularly in the Washington DC area. Recently, No Better Off performed at the Iota Club in Arlington and has also appeared at the Crozet Music Festival in Charlottesville.  All of the band members live in or near Falls Church.

The band’s repertoire of folk, rock, blues and country music includes fresh interpretations of songs by some of their musical heroes such as John Hiatt, Steve Earle, John Prine, Buddy Miller, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams and The Band.  The NBO concert will also feature original compositions by band members.

The No Better Off concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at ArtSpace Falls Church (410 South Maple Avenue).  Tickets are $20 and can be reserved at www.CreativeCauldron.org.

This is going to be a terrific night! What a great way to see and support the arts space. I know I’m looking forward to it!
