SATURDAY 3/27, 8:30 P.M. Earth Hour — Turn Off Your Lights!

Falls Church residents are invited to join millions around the world on Saturday, March 27, by turning off non-essential lights for one hour — “Earth Hour” — from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions.  The Falls Church City Council has approved a proclamation declaring March 27, 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. as “Earth Hour in Falls Church.”

The City of Falls Church has assumed a leadership role in efforts to combat climate change through the Climate Protection Initiative and the work of the Environmental Services Council to promote public awareness about the causes and impacts of climate change.  The City has taken steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to increase energy efficiency, including purchasing hybrid vehicles, using biodiesel fuel, expanding recycling programs, and requiring green roofs and/or LEED elements in special exception projects.

Earth Hour is an international and local symbolic event organized by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about climate change issues. For more information about Earth Hour visit www.earthhour.org.

Yes Earth Hour is fascinating and a great “event.” There are many things we can do to conserve energy – turning off non-essential lights, recognizing that we use too many lights and other appliances as it is especially “vampire” appliances – those appliances that are “somewhat always one” to enable quick start-up. As we get closer to Earth Day – April 22nd – let’s look at more ways to permanently reduce our energy consumption.
