WFC to EFC Metro Shut Down 3 Weekends for Construction

Special to the Falls Church Times

May 24, 2010

On Memorial Day weekend and the following two weekends in June there will be limited or no rail service on the Orange Line between East Falls Church and West Falls Church Metro stations.

During times when one track is closed, riders should add 15 minutes to their travel times. When both tracks are closed, travelers will have to transfer to bus, adding an estimated 30 minutes to their trips.

The track closures are caused by construction of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, which will eventually connect the new rail line to the Orange Line between East and West Falls Church. Contractors will work on a pier located east of the West Falls Church station, drive piles along the fence adjacent to I-66, and replace ties on the tracks.

From 10 p.m. to closing (3 a.m.) on Friday, May 28; Friday, June 4; and Friday, June 11, Orange Line trains will share one track between the East Falls Church and Vienna stations.

Beginning 7 a.m. Saturday, May 29, to closing on Monday, May 31, and all day Saturday, June 5; Sunday, June 6; Saturday, June 12; and Sunday, June 13, both tracks will be closed  between East and West Falls Church. Metro will operate free shuttle buses between the stations. All stations will remain open.

When there is no train service between the West Falls and East Falls Church stations, trains will operate every 20 minutes between the Vienna and West Falls Church stations, and every 12 minutes between the East Falls Church and New Carrollton stations. Shuttle buses between West and East Falls Church will run every 15 minutes.

The Metro Trip Planner website will not reflect the impact of this work on its schedules.
