City Losing Another Key Official

Suzanne Cotellessa, General Manager for Development Services for the City of Falls Church, has announced her resignation effective August 12 in order to devote full time to her ailing husband.
Cotellessa is the second key official to resign in as many months. The City’s Chief Financial Officer resigned in June, and City Manager Wyatt Shields is using an executive search firm to assist in filling that position.
“Sue has brought tremendous energy, smarts, and experience to the City’s Department of Development Services over the past 18 months,” said Shields. “She is a natural leader and her departure from the City will be sorely felt when she takes leave. My best wishes go with her as she takes care of what is most important in life.”
Cotellessa, a certified planner, zoning administrator and arborist, has been the General Manager of the Department of Development Services since January 2009.

Sue was a great asset to the city staff and will be sorely missed. She was also a pleasure to work with on a personal level.
We will especially miss Sue’s common sense and years of experience as we move to complete our Comprehensive Plan revision (with more detail on development) and our Zoning Code re-write.
I want to add to Melissa’s remarks about Sue. Sue’s abilities and knowledge as our planning director will be a great loss for our city and to the planning commision that is going into a very complicated and busy times. She is a “rock solid” person who is wonderful to work with. It’s probably not well know, but Sue and her husband moved into our city to shorten her commute with all the late hours so that she could spend more time with her husband. Now, that her time is needed even more, all who know her wish her well.
The CFO, the Planning Director and the IT Director have all left. I hope someone remembers to turn out the lights in City Hall when the last person quits.
Each of those three people are leaving for entirely different and individual reasons. Mike, don’t jump to conclusions without all the facts.
