Economic Development Authority member Phil Duncan joined the race for City Council yesterday, announcing his candidacy in a written statement.
Duncan, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, operates Civicatalyst Communications, a Falls Church firm providing editorial, public relations, event planning and outreach services to educational and civic organizations. Previously, he had a 20-year career as a journalist for Congressional Quarterly magazine.
In addition to his duties on the EDA, Duncan serves as chairman of the City Schools’ Business in Education Partnership. He previously served on the Falls Church Education Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Citizens Advisory Committee on Transportation, City Center Task Force, Athletic Boosters, and Little League.
Duncan’s wife, Leslie, is the daughter of former Falls Church Mayor Carol DeLong and Chet DeLong, a long-time member of the Board of the Mary Riley Syles Public Library.
Phil and Leslie Duncan’s two children, now in college, attended Falls Church City Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Duncan becomes the third candidate in the race for City Council, along with sitting Councilman Lawrence Webb and Falls Church Planning Commission Vice Chairman John Lawrence.
Voters will make their selections in May, filling three seats currently occupied by Webb, Mayor Nader Baroukh, and Councilwoman Robin Gardner. Gardner has announced that she does not plan to run for reelection. Baroukh is expected to announce his reelection campaign soon.
This election will be the last in which the City Council and School Board will be elected in the month of May. In 2013, the election for those offices will move to November, as decided in last year’s voter referendum.
