FOOD: Best Hamburger in the City?

By KATHLEEN NIXON

When I am feeling blue, or a little stressed, a burger is one of my best pick me ups. Give me a juicy burger, with cheddar cheese and bacon, and I am in heaven. We have many options here in the city, but I wanted to turn the tables and ask you, the reader, for your suggestions on where is the best burger and why?

For me the burger bun is crucial. It has to be fresh and just the right size rather than big and cumbersome to the point that I have to cut the burger in half.  What about French fries or chips? Are these essential or just a nice to have? Finally, what are the perfect toppings? Tomato, lettuce, onion and pickles? Are more exotic sautéed mushrooms, balsamic onions or pate’?

As burger establishments pop up all over the community like coffee shops used to, where do you go when you a craving a good burger?

So far the Four Provinces has the best burger. I also like the steak fries.

The regular burger at Mad Fox is very delicious. It has a great beefy taste, is not
too large and if one asks for the toppings on the side, can actually be picked up in the hand to bite into! If toppings are added, cover your shirt or you will show evidence of your meal as the juices run out onto you!

AMAZING! Hamburgers are still a legal commodity in the Little City!!!!? Will wonders never cease!!!! Organic only, I presume!! Quick, somebody call TEAM
    OBAMA’S food police!!!! :)

Jan – Thanks so much for the info on the Four Provinces burgers. I do remember the steak fries and what I love more is the variety of mustards that do with them.

Mary – great description on the burgers at Mad Fox. There is always a “tipping” point when you have toppings that don’t stay on top of the burger. I can’t remember if they do fries or not.

Anyone else on other burgers? I have a few places I go, but want to know where else folks go.

    Hand down, Elevation Burger!
My family does the single patty, with a variety of toppings. The burger MUST accompany a side of their fries. Their milkshakes however are a summer time MUST as well!

The burgers at Dogwood Tavern are good, too.

Thanks. Yes when Elevation Burger first opened up, I tried them and they were still working out many of the kinks including the oil for their fries which made them very heavy and oily. But they have improved, and I do find their fries to be quite good. I am also happy that they have started offering organic bacon.

Doghead Fish Tavern is the best! Monday evenings get $2 off any burger.

Gail – Thanks! I know many places in Arlington offer half price burger nights on Monday, but I didn’t know we had a discounted burger offering so close to the city limits!

Having just returned from Florida. I wish we had a Steak and Shake . Best burgers ever and they have Root Beer Floats! Can we get a float here? However the 4 P’s are good.

  11. Kathleen Nixon Falls Church City on February 17th, 2012 9:24 am

I think some of our local eateries do offer floats as part of their summer time fare.

My favorite is BGR. I know it’s not in FC City, but the one in Clarendon is almost never crowded, and I like their burger much better than the ones at Elevation. Of course, Dogfish is also good. I haven’t tried 4P’s in a while…do they still allow smoking there?

I just love Clare and Don’s Burger with a Fried Egg on Top. Yummy!

    Cher
I would put that under exotic toppings but then again I am from the West Coast where a standard is avocado on our burgers.

Kathleen, with your last name being NIXON, I surprised you haven’t been run out of the Peoples Republic. 4 P’s.

Love Elevation, and I also like Burger 7 (right outside the city limits). I don’t like huge burgers, I feel like I can eat “healthy” there if I get a single :-)

Hubby likes Four Guys in Merrifield. I never get burgers out…I like them still walking off my plate so I have beef fresh ground and run home to eat it. Four Guys fries remind me of the beach :)

I like Elevation Burger because the size of the burger is just right for me. But, between Mad Fox, 4Ps and Dogwood, I like the burger best at 4Ps. I choose it medium rare topped with swiss and sauteed mushrooms. I haven’t tried Clare and Don’s with the egg on top = very Euro and I do like egg on a burger. Both 4Ps and Dogwood have half-price burger days.

I agree that the size of the burger at Elevation fits my eating style now. And nice to know that some local places do have half price burgers! Thanks for that tip.

I want to thank everyone for their contributions and participation in today’s discussion on burgers! We now all have great fodder for future food forays!

Elevation burger has the right size for a quick burger, fries and a shake. Happily Elevation burger grill masters are learning how to speed up service and actually match your order to what is delivered to the table.

4 Ps gets my vote for the burger and beer meal. If you have the time to sit down and enjoy a pint with your burger then this is the place for you.

Dogwood has a great burger, and Burger 7 is very good too. Elevation Burger is just too bland, no taste at all, but they have great shakes!
