Another Tree in Tree City

For 34 consecutive years, the City of Falls Church has been named a Tree City USA community by The National Arbor Day Foundation. The City was the first community in Virginia to be recognized as a Tree City and has the longest state record for this annual national award.
And helping keep Falls Church green, the Village Preservation and Improvement Society deploys squads of volunteers every year to plant new trees around town. The VPIS Neighborhood Tree Program has been “bringing cool shade to your neighborhood since 2000,” most recently on April 21.

What variety of tree was planted? It’s nice to know the “baby’s name” from the nursery.
It has been 35 consecutive years and this was our 34th award (one year behind doing it and getting the award), The Neighborhood Tree Progam has planted ~650 trees over the last 12 years. VPIS earns the money from the Farmers Market Coffee Sale (thanks to Starbucks at Broaddale) and the Attic Treasurer Sale which is coming up on Saturday May 5. Please donate and come to the community center sale to support our city trees.

Barb, a variety of trees were planted around the City, including Northern Red Oak, Red Maple, Serviceberry, and Redbud. I’m not sure which tree is featured in the photo; perhaps the home owners can chime in?

Redbud is correct (there were transmission wires above, so it needed a tree with a lower canopy.
However, we did plant Oaks on N. Oak. Look at the corner of N. West and N. Oak streets. Those trees cost in the neighborhood of $300 each. And the planting help is FREE with the Tree. All a citizen has to do is go to http://www.vpis.org and apply. The city arborist helps determine the right tree to plant in the location.
