SUNDAY 11/11: Veterans Day Ceremony
The City of Falls Church will host a special Veterans Day Ceremony at the Falls Church City Veterans Memorial in front of the Community Center, 223 Little Falls St., on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The program will include remarks from keynote speaker Captain Jim Custer (US Navy), a resident of the City of Falls Church.
Presided over by Master of Ceremonies Harry Shovlin, the program will feature a welcoming address by Mayor Nader Baroukh, a remembrance for MIAs, a wreath presentation and prayer for departed veterans, and a performance of Taps by the Falls Church City Concert Band.
At this event, veterans who were recognized during the Greater Falls Church Veterans Council’s second annual Veterans Picnic, which was held on Oct. 13, will again be honored. Those honorees include Ed Strait, long-time local veteran programs activist and winner of the Veteran of the Year for 2012; Marvin McFeaters, past Chair of the Greater Falls Church Veterans Council, and winner of the Lifetime Achievement award in honor of his many hours of service to local veterans and for keeping the faith for our veterans as a local, state, and national officer with the Catholic War Veterans; and Jeffery W. Jones, winner of the Veterans Best Friend award for the work he has done to provide free landscaping to homes of local veterans through his Decorate-A-Vet program.
The ceremony is organized by the Recreation & Parks Department, the Greater Falls Church Veterans Council, representatives of American Legion Posts 124, 130 and 225, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Martin Leppert Sipes Post 9274, Catholic War Veterans Paul and Jacques Martin Post 1652, Northern Virginia WWII Veterans, the Veterans Memorial Committee, the Falls Church Daughters of the American Revolution, and other dedicated volunteers.
