Majors (ages 10-12)
On Saturday, May 4, the Marlins’ Brendan Fletchall pitched a complete game masterpiece, holding the Mason District Braves hitless in an 8-0 win. Facing only one batter over the minimum, Fletchall struck out ten and allowed only two base runners in six innings. The Braves threatened in the 4th, but Fletchall stranded the runner on third with a strike out and pitched a ground ball to third. The Marlins defense shined behind their hurler. Brian Murphy legged down a sinking line drive in the 5th inning, and Kailen Jordan cut down a would-be hit that same inning. After single runs in the 2nd and 4th innings, the Marlins bats went to work in the 5th and 6th, plating three in each inning. Murphy, Brendan Fletchall, Connor Fletchall, and Ryan Fletchall each got two hits. Several other Marlins contributed at the plate with hits, including: Coleman Blakeley, Jacob Morin, Owen Ossman, and Jordan.
On Wednesday, May 1, the first and second place Majors teams faced off in a pitchers duel to decide who will play in the Majors 2013 Regular Season Championship in June. The Nationals won 3-0 and thus won the first half of the season. The National’s David Miller pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 while facing a total of 19 batters over six innings. Cale Reinfurt blasted a solo home run (his 3rd of the season). The Nationals catcher, Sean Butler, hit a triple driving in two runs. The Oriole’s Joey Handley pitched five strong innings giving up only two hits and Jon Schooner pitching a flawless 6th inning in relief.
Also, on May 1, the Cubs defeated the Marlins 12-3 based on strong pitching from John Putziger, who threw eight strikeouts over five innings. Also for the Cubs, Cameron Smith hit a towering home run; Bill Comstock got three hits and Teddy Coates, Jack Taylor and Ben Manon all hit doubles. For the Marlins, Conner Fletchall pitched well, throwing three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Brian Murphy got two hits in addition to hits from Fletchall and Kailen Jordan.
AAA (ages 8-11)
The Falls Church Tigers improved their overall record to 4-1-1 on Saturday, May 4, with a 17-5 win over the Mason District Giants. At the plate, the Tigers were led by a two hit performance by Jameson Smith, with Connor Mills adding a two RBI double in the 5th inning. Also contributing hits for the Tigers were Mark Comstock, Jack Villa, Peter Villa, Sela Scheinman, and Mike Gerber. Gerber pitched two superb innings to start the game and was relieved by Sela Scheinman, who held the Giants to a single run over three innings.
Single A (ages 6-8)
On Saturday, May 4, in a barnburner, the Single A Bees defeated the Muckdogs by a score of 18 to 16 at Jefferson Village Park. Joseph Jones and Ameya Mandhare consistently hit the ball hard for the Bees; with Billy Asel, David Cockrell, and Payton Raia providing balanced support both at the plate and with strong defense in the field. The Muckdogs’ Noah Grossman, Ben Kenner, Wyatt Scheinbaum, and Marshall Bowie all found their way safely on base with consistent hitting and contributed on defense. In a defensive highlight for the Muckdogs, in the 4th inning Harris Lechtman caught a towering fly ball in left field that led to a double play. With the Muckdogs trailing by seven runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, Scheinbaum’s two-run scoring double helped to close the gap.
