Michael Pipkin, priest of Falls Church (continuing) Episcopal Church, holds care packages stuffed with needed goodies for the troops in Afghanistan. Parishioners who filled the boxes worked from a list provided by a chaplain of an engineering battalion.
The troop care packages were mailed in early August, in what many thought of as an early Christmas. So many people think of the troops overseas during the December holidays and that is great, said a church spokesperson. But we wanted them to know we all think of them all year, so we sent the boxes in August, when it’s very hot on several levels.
Items included in the boxes included hard candies, sheets, sunscreen, moisturizer, magazines, shampoos, lemonade or tea powders, and notecards for the soldiers to mail home.

As a mother of 2 sons who both joined the Marines and have both been deployed twice to Iraq I thank the caring individuals who take part.
They do get these boxes and are grateful.
