On Friday, February 3 at 7:30 pm,  the Latin American musical duo Ernesto Bravo and Jose Sacin will present a musical journey with a wide variety of instruments such as guitar, charango, quena and Latin American percussion instruments. Bravo and Sacin are talented singers and musicians who will surprise the audience as they swithc from instrumentals to vocals for an unusual effect.

Raymi will perform Andean - Latin Fusion Music Saturday, February 4 at 7:30 pm at Creative Cauldron at ArtSpace.

On Saturday, February 4 at 7:30pm, Raymi will perform their haunting and mystical fusion of Andean and Latin music. Raymi uses traditional instruments such as Zamponas, Moscenos, Quenas and Tarkas in context with the classic band instrumentation, exploring the possibilities that the bass, guitars, keyboards and trap drums can have with the Andes tradition.

Creative Cauldron performing artists will join forces with Raymi musicians for an afternoon of storytelling, bringing to life ancient folktales from teh Andes with large-scale puppets, choreography and music.   The family-friendly story theater presentation “Tales from the Andes” will be on Sunday, February 5 at 2 pm.

Tickets for the evening shows are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.  Tickets for the Sunday Story Theater are $10 each.  Order in advance online at www.creativecauldron.org.

The Falls Church City School Board appointed long-time education activist Cecily Shea last night to temporarily fill a vacated school board position.   Shea will fill the unexpired term of Pat Riccards, who recently resigned from the panel as a result of a new job out of state.

Eight Falls Church residents had applied for Riccards’ position on the school board.  An election will occur in May to determine who will fill the final two years of Riccard’s term.

Alicia Lannes was a Fairfax County high school honor student and athlete who died of a drug overdose in her home on March 5, 2008. Her parents, Donna and Greg Lannes, related Alicia’s tragedy at a substance abuse forum at George Mason High School on January 4, 2012. Others featured in this video are Jennifer Lewis-Cooper, coordinator of a Fairfax drug abuse prevention organization, and Karen Case, a Falls Church City Public Schools drug abuse prevention specialist. The video is 56 minutes long.

The George Mason High School boys varsity basketball team handed William Monroe its first loss in district play tonight as the Mustangs prevailed 64-60 at the Mary Ellen Henderson Gymnasium.

The Monroe Dragons came out firing in the first quarter, going up 16-7 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the period.  The Mustangs remained unrattled, however, chipping away until they took the lead mid-way through the second quarter.

The game remained close into the fourth period, with Mason able to gain no more than a six point advantage.  Monroe briefly regained the lead by one point with seven minutes left to play, but Mason stormed back with key baskets and free throws to thwart the Dragons’ effort.

On defense, George Mason went man-to-man most of the game, but switched to a 2-3 zone late in the game to counter a taller Monroe front line.  The move worked for the Mustangs, as the zone allowed them to bottle up the inside, force shots from the perimeter, and box out for rebounds.

Point guard Noel Obusan led the Mustang offense with 30 points, repeatedly penetrating the Monroe defense for shots in the paint and adding 8 of 9 from the free-throw line.  Nate Ogle had 13 points and 9 rebounds for the Mustangs, including key plays in the fourth quarter as Mason fought off Monroe’s comeback attempts. 

With the victory, Mason moves into a tie for first place in the Bull Run District, sharing the top spot with Monroe and Madison County.   The Mustangs are 5-1 in district play and10-3 overall.

Mason plays at Manassas Park Thursday at 7:45pm to complete the first round of Bull Run District play.
