SATURDAY, 2/11: When in FC Do Like the Italians

Travel to Italy this weekend as the Washington, DC based commedia dell’Arte performance troupe, Faction of Fools presents two performances at Creative Cauldron’s continuing Passport to the World Festival at ArtSpace Falls Church.

This one-man show will delight theater and comedy fans Saturday night, February 11 at 7:30 pm at Creative Cauldron. Part of the "Passport to the World Festival" as it travels to Italy.

On Saturday, February 11 at 7:30 pm, Faction of Fools Artistic Director Matthew R. Wilson will perform “The Great One-Man Commedia Epic,” a one-man show in which he performs 12 different characters drawn from the historical commedia dell’ Arte canon. The piece was originally commissioned in 2004 for Italy’s 20^th annual Stage Internazionale. Young lovers have their lives thrown into chaos as their wedding plans are threatened by squabbling fathers, boasting war heroes and a host of well-meaning but dim-witted servants. The entire town is drawn to the brink of tragedy before love prevails, normalcy is restored and comedy triumphs. This one-man show is a treat for avant-garde theater fans, scholars of dramatic history, and the fun-loving child in all of us.

On Sunday, February 12 at 2 pm, the Faction of Fools troupe will present a fun-filled commedia version of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” In this Helen Hayes Award Recommended show, you will see the Faction of Fools’ high octane version featuring five actors in a one-hour perfromance. They will bring physical spectacularity to Shakespeare’s poetry, highlighting tragedy by juxtaposing it with humor.

And the finale of this weekend trip to Italy will be an Italian Village Dance Workshop led by Celest DiPietrapolo, Rosina DiPietrapolo and Marie Cocco at 4 pm Sunday, February 12. Audiences will be introduced to traditional music and dance from small villages throughout Italy and will learn several dances. Family friendly so bring the kids and the grandparents.

Tickets for either of the Faction of Fools shows are $20 for adults and $18 for students and seniors. The dance workshop tickets are $10 each. Order online in advance at www.creativecauldron.org or by calling 571-239-5288.

Creative Cauldron performing artists will join forces with Raymi musicians for an afternoon of storytelling, folktales from the Andes in South America, puppets, choreography and music. An interactive event for the whole family on Sunday, February 5 at 2 pm. Part of the Passport to the World Festival presented by Creative Cauldron.

The Passport to the World Festival goes to South America this weekend with two musical performances and a story theater show at Creative Cauldron at ArtSpace Falls Church.

On Friday, February 3 at 7:30 pm, the Latin American musical duo Ernesto Bravo and Jose Sacin will present a musical journey with a wide variety of instruments such as guitar, charango, quena and Latin American percussion instruments. Bravo and Sacin are talented singers and musicians who will surprise the audience as they swithc from instrumentals to vocals for an unusual effect.

Raymi will perform Andean - Latin Fusion Music Saturday, February 4 at 7:30 pm at Creative Cauldron at ArtSpace.

On Saturday, February 4 at 7:30pm, Raymi will perform their haunting and mystical fusion of Andean and Latin music. Raymi uses traditional instruments such as Zamponas, Moscenos, Quenas and Tarkas in context with the classic band instrumentation, exploring the possibilities that the bass, guitars, keyboards and trap drums can have with the Andes tradition.

Creative Cauldron performing artists will join forces with Raymi musicians for an afternoon of storytelling, bringing to life ancient folktales from teh Andes with large-scale puppets, choreography and music. The family-friendly story theater presentation “Tales from the Andes” will be on Sunday, February 5 at 2 pm.

Tickets for the evening shows are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets for the Sunday Story Theater are $10 each. Order in advance online at www.creativecauldron.org.

Africa is First Stop in Passport to the World Festival

Creative Cauldron’s 2012 Passport to the World Festival of Music, Dance and Theater begins on Saturday, January 14 at 7:30 pm with a performance of Kamel Zennia and Band. Algerian born Zennia plays music inspired by the diverse cultures of North Africa, from the coastal regions of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, to the towns in the deepest reaches of the Sahara. With his unique fusion of Berber, Gnawa, Rhumba Flamenca and Algerian folk/rock sounds, the evening is sure to be one full of great music and dancing. Tickets are $15 adults and $12 for seniors/students.

Kamel Zennia and Band opens the "Passport to the World Festival" at Creative Cauldron on Saturday, January 14. The two-month long series highlights a different region of the world every weekend through music, dance and theater.

On Sunday, January 15 at 2 pm, West African storyteller Auntie (Vera) Oye will introduce families to West African culture and food. Tickets are $10 each.

2012 Art Contest Winners Exhibit at FIRSTfriday

FIRSTfriday of Falls Church invites you to continue your New Year’s festivities with the very first FIRSTfriday of 2012. Start off the new year with an evening of local art, food, and fun.

At the Park Avenue Gallery at Art and Frame of Falls Church (111 Park Avenue), the artwork of blossoming young artists will be presented in an exhibit of the 2012 Falls Church Student Art Contest. There will be an artist reception on Friday, January 6 from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibit of all the entries and online calendar winners will run through January 31. An added attraction for the January FIRSTfriday event at Art and Frame will be caricature artist Marie Cheek.

One of the winning entries in the 2012 Falls Church Student Art Contest sponsored by FIRSTfriday of Falls Church. All the contest entries and winners who will be featured in an online calendar are on exhibit at the Park Avenue Gallery at Art and Frame of Falls Church, 111 Park Avenue, through January 31.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve at Creative Cauldron at ArtSpace with local band favorite, Jack Wagon! The seven-piece Classic Rock and Soul band has performed throughout the Washington DC area and is sure to ring in the New Year with a night full of great music, dancing and fun. Led by Bruce Turner, Jack Wagon’s music repertoire consists of covers from popular Rock, Soul, Motown, Blues, and R&B bands and artists from the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. The night begins at 8 pm on Saturday, December 31st and the party goes until 1 am. Tickets are $20 and includes light hors d’oeuvres and a champagne toast at midnight for those 21 and older.
