Art is All Around April 1 — No Fooling

The April Fool’s weekend starts off with several visual art exhibits on FIRSTfriday, April 1, at various venues throughout the City including: Art and Frame of Falls Church (111 Park Avenue), Stifel & Capra (260 West Broad Street), Curves (240 W. Letters is Falls Church Arts’ latest exhibit in the gallery at ArtSpace Falls Church (410 S. Maple Avenue).  See the works juried into this show that asked artists to create and interpret LETTERS. Make your own art at Clay Café Studios (101 N. Maple Avenue).  During the FIRSTfriday reception from 6 to 9 pm, decorate a free ceramic egg and you’ll have it in time for Easter.

Creative Cauldron continues performances of “The Selfish Giant” on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm at ArtSpace Falls Church (410 S. Maple Avenue). The play is an adaptation of an Oscar Wilde story that he wrote for his sons.  It features original music and a large-scale puppet.  The cast includes Helen Hayes Award-winning actor, Stephen Gregory Smith and student performers from Creative Cauldron’s Learning Theater program.  See www.CreativeCauldron.org for tickets.

Music lovers have choices all weekend with Irish music at Ireland’s Four Provinces Restaurant (105 W. Broad Street) and dance music at Dogwood Tavern (132 West Broad Street) both Friday and Saturday nights.  The State Theatre (220 North Washington Street) features rock/goth music by Peter Murphy on Friday night and The Clarks on Saturday night.

Blues lovers can hear – or play – all weekend at Bangkok Blues (926 West Broad Street) with bands performing Friday and  Saturday nights and an open Blues Jam Sunday evening starting at 6:00 pm.

Art is everywhere this weekend in The Little City of Falls Church.  No fooling.

“Letters” Art Exhibit at ArtSpace

Falls Church Arts (FCA) is sponsoring a juried art show that asked artists to create and interpret LETTERS.  Exhibiting artists will discuss their work at the opening reception on Thursday, March 24 at 7:00 pm at ArtSpace, 410 S. Maple Avenue. 

The “Letters” show features a wide variety of artwork in media ranging from paint to paper to fiber and photographs. FCA Gallery at ArtSpace hours are Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 pm; Fridays, 5:00-7:00 pm; and Saturdays, 4:00-7:00 pm. The show runs through Saturday, April 9. 

In addition to the art exhibit, FCA is hosting two events in April at ArtSpace that expand on the “Letters” theme.

On Thursday, April 7 at 7 pm, novelist, playwright and essayist Warren Goldie will be featured at a meet-the-writer session entitled “Publish! Secrets of a Professional Writer.” After a brief introductory presentation, Warren will participate in a Q&A session, sharing what he has learned as a professional writer.  He will answer questions about everything from story structure to agents and publishers, from rejection to self-publishing. 

Warren Goldie will speak at the FCA Gallery at ArtSpace on April 7. His novel, "Waking Maya" was named Book of the Month at BookReview.com

On Tuesday, April 12 at 7 pm, FCA will host a discussion with two entrepreneurs-turned-authors discussing the topic “Finding Purpose and Creating Community Through Writing.”

Misti Burmeister is the best-selling author of Boomers to Bloggers and CEO of Inspirion, LLC. Mali Phonpadith is an international award-winning poet and CEO of Mali Creative, LLC.  These two young women will share their passion for writing and speak to the importance of working together to create a true sense of community. The discussion will focus on the artists’ journeys throughout their book-writing process and why they chose the path of sharing their life stories with the world in their forthcoming books.

Big Opening Crowd for Passport Festival Kickoff

Approximately 200 people attended last Friday’s opening reception for the 8th Annual Falls Church Arts All Member Show at ArtSpace, 410 S. Maple Avenue.  The exhibit’s artwork reflects the theme of the  Passport to the World Festival, featuring hte work of 60 artists and their travels or the influence of other cultures on their work.

Every weekend, through March 6, audiences can enjoy the art exhibit while experiencing music and dance performances and workshops from cultures and traditions from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The World Comes to The Little City through Festival

For the next two months, the Passport to the World Festival brings different cultures and different types of art to ArtSpace Falls Church. Through performances, workshops, demonstrations and exhibits, audiences will be exposed to cultures and traditions from around the globe.

“Passport to the World: A Festival of Music, Dance, Art and Story” is presented by Creative Cauldron at ArtSpace Falls Church, 410 S. Maple Avenue.

The two-month long series brings music and dance performances every weekend to Falls Church, representing traditions from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.  The festival runs from January 14 through March 6.  Ticket prices range from free to $15.

Friday 1/14: Art Show Opens “Passport to the World” Festival

The eighth annual Falls Church Arts (FCA) all member show opens with a reception from 7 to 9 pm on Friday, January 14 at ArtSpace Falls Church (410 S. Maple Ave).  The exhibit is the inaugural event to Passport to the World: A Festival of Music, Dance, Art and Story.  The art show features over 100 works in various media by 60 FCA members. The show continues Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16,  from noon to 4 pm.

Presented by Creative Cauldron, the Passport to the World Festival is a two-month long program that will feature weekend performances in diverse music and dance traditions from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. For the fifth consecutive year, the FCA all member show will be co-directed by Marty Meserve, former president of FCA, and Deborah Conn, an award winning watercolor and portrait painter.

The artwork in the FCA show reflects the artists’ travels (here or abroad, real or imagined) or the influences that other cultures have had on their work. The art exhibit’s theme is a reflection of the cross-cultural journey that Passport to the World festival-goers will experience through the exhibit and performances, workshops and demonstrations.  The FCA art exhibit will be open during the Passport to the World Festival through March 6: Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 7  pm and Sundays (except February 13) from 4 to 6 pm. For more information about Falls Church Arts, go to www.fallschurcharts.org

Passport to the World Festival Opens with Art Show

Again this year, the FCA all member show exhibit director is Deborah Conn, an award winning watercolor and portrait painter whose work has been shown at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Strathmore Hall in Rockville, and the Jo Ann Rose Gallery in Reston, where she won first place in the League of Reston Artists’ 2006 juried exhibition.

Photoshop Workshop to Benefit Falls Church Arts

Falls Church Arts (FCA) is sponsoring an Introduction to Photoshop workshop where participants will learn input to output. The two-part seminar will be lead by commercial photographer and City resident, Art Pierson.

The workshop includes two 2-1/2 -hour sessions, with the opportunity to ask questions about individual situations or projects.  The seminar covers the basics of image processing software and is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wishes to learn more.  Attendees will learn color systems, profiles, sizing, nondestructive edits, tools and more. 

Two different sessions are being offered: attend Part 1 on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 pm or Saturday, January 22 at 1 pm  and attend Part 2 either Thursday, February 3 at 7 pm or Saturday, February 5 at 1 pm.   

The fee for the two-part workshop is $40 for Falls Church Arts members and students and $60 for nonmembers.  All of the proceeds from the workshops will be donated to support Falls Church Arts.  For more specific information about the Photoshop workshop, call 703-237-5937.   To register for the workshop, go to www.fallschurcharts.org
