The Falls Church Youth Lacrosse Club’s Boys U13 A team started its second season with a win of 3-2 against Herndon. The team played a solid, hard fought game for its opener against an experienced Herndon zone defense. Goalie Dan Dusenberry made many great saves. The Falls Church defense stayed in position and didn’t give up any easy shots. Offensively, Falls Church handled the ball well and showed patience against a tightly packed Herndon defense. Eriksen Johansen scored 2 and Sean Fitzgerald scored 1.

Since then the team has suffered another couple of losses, to Algonkian 3 to 5, and then to Manassas Battlefield 3 to 7. Scores were contributed by Fitzgerald, Jackson Cogar, Miles Cobb, and Johansen.

Against Annandale last Saturday, Falls Church lost by a score of 3 to 10. Cogar, Fitzgerald, and Brandon Ward each scored. Despite the lopsided score, the team didn’t give up and played a spirited, fun game with Annandale. Head Coach Dave Cogar summed it up optimistically, “We hope to keep building on these experiences and our energetic practices to grow as a team.”

This is only the team’s second year playing the in the A level and it is the first Falls Church U13 Boys team to ever play in the A level. In previous years, Falls Church never had enough players to field two teams at U13. But, after winning the U11B championship in 2008, the players and coaches decided to give it a shot. Last year, their first year at the A level, the team struggled and went 0-8-1. So this season the team hopes to improve that record and is already on its way with a current record of 1 win and 3 losses.

The Mustang U13A team next travels to Clifton to take on Braddock Road U13A on Sunday.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS: Hollywood Video Turns Out Lights

Hollywood Video, the Broadway Condominium’s anchor retail store, closed Nov. 1 – one of 450 stores suffering that fate this year out of some 2,900 stores owned by parent Movie Gallery.

Retail establishments at the Broadway have not enjoyed much success during the 80-condo building’s five-years of existence. Zing’s Grill opened first on the corner, but subsequently shut down, later to be replaced by Huang’sThe Broadway's anchor tenant closed Nov. 1. Other stores, including Verizon and, most recently, Impulsive gift shop, have come and gone.

The good news? Plenty of customer parking.

Hollywood Video’s demise was anticipated in a Falls Church Times report last March: “Video Rental Firms on Deathwatch – Blame Netflix and Internet.”

Mad Fox Brewery Looks at April Opening

Those empty parking spots at the Broadway could be enticing to the hundreds of customers that Mad Fox Brewery hopes to attract to its pub/restaurant location just down the street at the Spectrum. The City’s Economic Development Office reports that Mad Fox developers are busy with floor plans, elevations, and equipment orders. But in a cautionary note, the EDO observes that Mad Fox has “many City/State/Federal regulations to navigate.” Hmmm – April, you say? The clock is ticking. Read more

Development News: Brewery Owners ‘Crazy Like a Fox’

April 30, 2009 by George Southern · 2 Comments

What is it about the front corner retail space in the new Spectrum condominium?

The original rendering displayed at the site showed an “Anne Baylor” shop scheduled to open in Fall 2006.

Of course, that was merely the architect’s musing. Later, much later, Not Your Average Joe’s restaurant had concrete plans to open in the spot.

The recession killed that. Then we got the news that Mad Fox Brewing Company was all set to go. Mad Fox signed a letter of intent with Spectrum developer Waterford in February.

It turns out that the Mad Fox folks are crazy — like a fox. They’re ready to build the brewery as soon as they can find someone else to pay for it. Someone called an “investor.” We hear they’re not even asking at the banks, looking instead for individuals with deep pockets.

According to the City’s Economic Development Office, Mad Fox reports it’s “making great progress” in its search for those kind of people. Assuming investors come forward, Mad Fox plans a November grand opening.

Looking for somewhere to invest that inheritance? Contact Director Rick Garvin:

Amid Dismal Auto Sales, Little Kia Shines

February 4, 2009 by George Southern · 2 Comments

What is Kia? It’s a Korean company that built bicycles in the ‘50s, motor scooters in the ‘60s, and expanded to autos in the ‘70s. The first Kia car came to America in the ‘80s, marketed as the Ford Festiva. In the ‘90s Kia started selling cars here under its own name.

So what does Kia have to do with the City of Falls Church? First, some amazing statistics: Maybe you have heard of Kia, maybe not. But you are familiar with such brands as Audi, Buick, Mercury, Saab, and Volvo. Well, the January national sales figures just came out, and little Kia outsold those better-known cars. Not just outsold them, but outsold them COMBINED!

Comparing January U.S. sales records one-on-one, Kia also outsold Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Chrysler, Infiniti, Jeep, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes, Pontiac, Porsche, Saturn, Subaru, and VW.

And in a month when even mighty Toyota’s sales dropped by 32 percent, Kia registered a 3.5 percent increase.

Now the Falls Church connection: Right on Broad Street is one of only four Kia dealerships in all of northern Virgina. (The others are in Alexandria, Fairfax, and Manassas.) So this should be very good news for the City.

This is not an ad for Beyer Kia, and in the interests of journalistic integrity and sloth, I didn’t even give them a call. If I had, I might have asked how the Beyer Volvo side is faring, given that January national sales figures for Volvo were down 64 percent. But then I would also need to call International Motors on South Washington Street to ask how their Saab sales are doing in light of January’s 46 percent national drop.

The other two new car dealerships in the City would also not be fun calls to make: Koons Dodge (nationally down 50 percent) and Koons Ford (national figures down 40 percent).

A final car thought: While the City pursues its quest to achieve a “brand image,” I recall a friend telling me that back in the ‘80s his attention was drawn to Falls Church City because the police cars were all Volvos. That must be a classy place to live, he reasoned, and in fact he moved here. The Volvo police cars are history now, of course (guess they went out with Mayor Beyer), and Falls Church City’s Finest drive Fords with V8 engines.

But – given that the top speed limit in the City is 30 mph, do we need those big Fords? Of course the City should buy locally – hmmm – how about an economical police car? How about a Kia? That would “brand” our City faster than any video presentation.
