George Mason’s Boys and Girls varsity soccer teams won both sides of a double-header last night to assure trips to the State Tournament.

In the semi-final round of the Region B Tournament, the Mustang Girls defeated Appomattox County 7 to 0, while the boys overcame a tough Nelson County team to win 2 to 1. The victories guarantee a trip to the 2013 State Championship Tournament which will start with quarterfinal games for both teams at home on June 4.

In a spirited display, all seven of the Girls goals came with Mason playing one player down following a questionable red card in the middle of the first period. The boys dominated their game against Nelson County but had a hard time finding the net. Heroic work by the Nelson goalkeeper Francisco Becerra-Torres and several shots off the frame kept the game tight.

The Girls enter the State Tournament on a quest to win their 6th straight state title and 8th overall.  The Boys return to State for the third time in four years after failing to leave District play last year.

The Mustang Girls won the Bull Run District regular season in a play-off game against Clarke County 3 to 0 and then lost the final game of the District tournament, again to Clarke 1 to 0 at home.  They finished the regular season with a 14-2-0 record, both losses 1 to 0 against Clarke County.

The Boys team went through the regular season and District Tournament undefeated, beating Clarke County in the Tournament 2 to 1. The boys finished District play with a 12-0-1 record, marred only by a scoreless tie against last-year’s Virginia Group A State Champion, Manassas Park.

The Girls travel to Stuarts Draft High School on Friday 5/31 for the Region B Championship game at 6pm. Stuarts Draft defeated Clarke 2 to 1 on their way to the Region title game.

The Boys travel to Stonewall Jackson High School for their game, also on Friday, at 7pm.

The George Mason Girls Soccer team won an unprecedented fourth-straight Virginia State Group A soccer championship defeating Clark County 2 to 0 in Radford on Saturday. The George Mason Boys fell to Manassas Park 3 to 2 in a hard-fought contest to finish as runner-up.

The Girls defeated Radford 5 to 0 on Friday to advance to the State Finals hosted at Radford University in Radford, VA.

In the finals, George Mason defeated Bull Run District rival Clark County for the fifth time this season. Senior Violet Miller and Junior Leah Roth found the back of the net for George Mason.

The Boys soundly defeated Galax 8 to 0 on Friday to challenge Manassas Park in the Saturday Final, a rematch of the District and Regional Finals.

Breakdowns during the final 12 minutes of the first half led to the Mustangs giving up three goals to a strong Man Park side. Returning in the second half to play with considerable intensity, a Mustang goal by Cole Hinson and a successful penalty kick by Eion Oosterbaan allowed George Mason to pull within one, but they were unable to  equalize.

The Mustang Boys defeated Manassas Park in their first meeting of the season, but have lost the following four matches to their new rival. This was the  Cougars first State soccer title. Mason has played in the State finals six times since 1999, winning five times, including the past two years.

The Washington Post provided good coverage of both the Girls’ and Boys’ games.

BASKETBALL: Mason Mustangs Throttle Strasburg 69-44

Jeremy Stewart dropped 18 points, Francky Andrianarison added 13 and Nate Ogle scored 10 and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds as the George Mason Boys pulled away from Strasburg 69-44 Friday night at Strasburg. Mason has now won 9 or their last 10 games and moves to 5-0 in the Bull Run District, 11-3 over all. GM stayed a full game ahead of Clarke County, who defeated Madison County 65-47 last night.

GM led 16-9 after one quarter and 37-26 at halftime, with Andrianarison burying all three of his triples in the first half. The margin would have been greater if the Mustangs hadn’t been whistled for a staggering 16 fouls in the first two quarters, allowing Strasburg to score 13 of their points from the charity stripe. After the Rams (4-11, 2-3 Bull Run District) scored the first 5 points of the third quarter, a three pointer by Stewart pushed the lead back to 9, and keyed a 10-0 run that essentially put the game away.

Point guard Noel Obusan dished out 4 assists for the Stangs, and Brandon Alexander and Stewart blocked 2 shots each. Mason has now limited their last two opponents to 6 points apiece in the 4th quarter, and has not allowed 50 points in three straight BRD games. In all, 11 of the 12 Mustangs in uniform scored on the night, with 9 of the players playing 10 minutes or more. GM shot 46% from inside the arc and 41% from beyond, as better shot selection and some transition layups led to their second highest point total on the season. The Bull Run District frontrunners also committed only 14 turnovers, the fourth straight game they have been under 15.

Mason next plays at home Thursday January 27 vs. Rappahannock County.
