George Mason High School’s varsity girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams each won their regional championship races November 3, marking the first regional cross-country double victory in the school’s history.
Beating arch-rival Clarke County and other schools, both Mason teams are now headed for the state championship meet November 13.
The Lady Mustangs are defending state champs. Julia Estrada, Michele de Mars, Eva Estrada, Emma Vieillescazes, Abby Perez, Mollie Breen and Hannah Beaman had the first race on a cool, overcast day at Panorama Farms, home course of the University of Virginia Cavaliers cross country team. All seven GMHS girls charged through the hilly, 5-kilometer grass course in 21 minutes or less, dominating the event and coming away with their third consecutive regional title. The seven won all-region individual recognition as well.
The boys team-Jordan Robarge, Jesse Schaffer, Jeremy K. Brown, Daniel Drawbaugh, Jeremy M. Brown, Dane Warner and Paul Henninger-fought off tough competition from Clarke and Altavista high schools. At the finish, each of the Mustang boys came across the line in less than 18 minutes and 13 seconds, winning the first-ever boys’ cross country regional championship for George Mason High School.
Coached by Julie Bravin and Kristin White, the GMHS cross-country program this season has had more than 60 student-athletes involved at the varsity and junior varsity levels.
