SATURDAY: 4/13: Spontaneous Eco Art on City Clean-Up Day
April 3, 2013 by Falls Church Times Staff · Leave a Comment
On April 13, 13, in the city of Falls Church, Virginia, a group of spontaneous Eco-artists will gather, explore, assemble and attempt to create a sculpture with what was found during the City-Clean-Up day.
Trash stays. What we leave behind us and out of sight continues to live and impact our environment. We have to co-exist, why not make something interesting out of it? “Eco Art” is a contemporary form of environmental art created by artists who are concerned about local and global environmental situations, and who take art making to a functional format.
What goes unnoticed or reflect human neglect can become a source of inspiration, a source of education, a conversation piece, between artists, environmentally concerned citizens and the rest of the community. Much environmental art is ephemeral, and we have no idea what the future of this piece will be, except that it will be designed for the community to see, make comments, and hopefully reflect on the local and global environmental situation.

This year’s judge will be Meg Walsh, whose work has garnered numerous awards at juried exhibitions and national plein air competitions, including winning the Best in Show prize in the 2011 Falls Church Plein Air Festival. Her work is on sale at fine art galleries in three states, and Falls Church Arts
is pleased to have Meg’s talent and experience for judging this year’s Falls Church Arts Plein Air Festival.
Plein Air, literally means “painting outside” and painters from around the area and as far away as Carlysle, Pennsylvania, have come to paint “Scenes in the City”. The outside paintings express the color, atmosphere, and temperature that is often lost in paintings that are made from photographs. Though painting outside is considered more common these days, it was a revolutionary development. It is associated with Impressionism, capturing natural light and fleeting moments on the canvas. It was made possible by the innovations of the paint tube and portable easels, and plein air paintings are considered to have a special natural charm. Falls Church Arts would love to see City residents view the artist’s renditions of “Scenes in the City”.
