Leaf Collection Begins October 19

It may not seem like fall is here yet, but get your leaves ready. City crews will collect leaves from residential areas beginning next Monday, October 19.

Residents should rake their leaves to the curb, taking caution to avoid raking them into or on top of gutters, sidewalks, and fire hydrants. Do not include stones, litter, branches, or other debris that may damage equipment or block storm drains.

Neighborhoods south of Broad Street will be swept first, from Oct. 19 to Oct. 23, with areas north of Broad getting the treatment the following week. Crews will continue in a similar, alternating pattern twice more before the effort ends just before Christmas.

Residents are asked to keep all other collection material at least five feet away from leaf piles. Do not mix brush or green waste items such as ivy or flowers with leaves. The leaf mulch composting process does not reach temperatures high enough to kill weed spores.

After collection, the leaves will be processed into high-quality leaf mulch that will be available at the Recycling Center in March 2016.

More information and the full pickup schedule is online at www.fallschurchva.gov/LeafCollection.
