West Street Detour To Begin Wednesday

The second phase of the South West Street roadbed reconstruction project is set to begin on Wednesday, and it will include a road closure and a detour through one of the adjacent residential neighborhoods.

West Street will be closed between Poplar Drive and Fowler Street, and signs marking the detour will direct drivers from Parker Avenue to South Spring Street to Poplar Drive and back to West. The detour is expected to last between one and two weeks.

The project will reconstruct aging infrastructure along South West Street. Stormwater facility crossings will be repaired as needed and failing pavement will be excavated and replaced with new materials. In areas where the pavement is not failing and simply needs to be rehabilitated, such as along cross streets near their intersections with South West Street, the surface will be milled and repaved. Finally, this project will install new pavement markings once construction is completed.

On September 15, community members participated in a discussion with City staff on proposed marking layouts and new pedestrian and cyclist facilities; information and materials from that meeting are available at www.fallschurchva.gov/SWestSt.
